Chrysler Museum of Art officially announced as site of 2017 Glass Art Society Conference

The Glass Art Society has announced that the Chrysler Museum of Art, the main building and neighboring glass studio, will host the 46th annual gathering of the glass art world. With the theme: "Reflections from the Edge: Glass, Art, and Performance," the 2017 conference will run from June 1st through 3rd, 2017, and will be co-chaired by Diane Wright, the glass curator at the Chrysler Museum; Charlotte Potter, manager and program director of the museum's glass studio; and community members Virginia Hitch and Colin McKinnon. Performance art using glass, a focus of the Chrysler Museum of Art Glass Studio under Potter's leadership, will be a central focus of the 2017 event, according to today's announcement. The event will follow the 2016 conference taking place in Corning, New York.

Full Program Released for the 2015 Robert M. Minkoff Foundation Academic Symposium at UrbanGlass

The full schedule for the 2015 Robert M. Minkoff Foundation Academic Symposium at UrbanGlass — complete with times, dates, and maps — has just been released. Among the highlights of this year's symposium, which has the theme of "New Technologies in Practice," is a Chelsea gallery tour that includes stops at Andrea Rosen Gallery to discuss Josiah McElheny's latest work, Sean Kelly Gallery to hear about Idris Khan's recent work in glass, and Heller Gallery for a presentation of new work by April Surgent as well as a panel discussion on the challenges of taking over a glass program and inheriting its technology. Panelists include glass program heads Helen Lee (UWisconsin, Madison), Kim Harty (CCA, Detroit), Marc Petrovic (CIA, Cleveland), and Sharyn O'Mara (Tyler, Philadelphia). A reception at the loft of a downtown art collector will cap off the first day's activities.

On Tuesday, artist Rachel Owens to lecture about her glass-and-resin work that critiques consumerism

On the evening of August 11th, internationally-exhibiting artist Rachel Owens will speak about her work and process during an evening lecture at UrbanGlass in Brooklyn (UrbanGlass publishes the GLASS Quarterly Hot Sheet). The artist, whose work graced the cover of the Summer 2015 edition of GLASS (#139), explores the corrosive effects of consumer culture driven to unsustainable levels of desire by retail mercandising and marketing. Ownes makes sculptures of molded broken glass and resin, which she employs for its seductive and repulsive push-puil.

Glass well-represented at the first Seattle Art Fair

Seattle is basking in its inaugural art fair this weekend, enjoying good press, good crowds, good weather, and an encouraging number of red dots. The glass art shown at the 2015 Seattle Art Fair, which opened on July 30 and ended today, represents a wide range of invention and ideas.

Opening on Saturday June 13th in Mamaroneck, New York, an exhibition entitled “Glass: In The Nature of Things” will feature new work by Sandy Gellis, Susan Cox, and Jane Bruce—three New York-based artists who recently partook in a joint residency at the Bullseye Resource Center, the site of the exhibition which will include Sandy Gellis’ Charting Earth, River Sediments and Compounds (2015), Susan Cox’s Cathy’s Memories (2015), and Jane Bruce’s From the Edge (2015).

Stained glass artists to convene in Washington, D.C., for 10th annual conference

From June 18th through the 21st, 2015 the American Glass Guild will kick off its 10th Anniversary Conference in Rockville, Maryland, and Washington, DC. The event will include workshops by leading stained-glass artists as well as lectures and demonstrations. The three-day event will be preceded by The Annual Live Auction, which raises funds for the James Whitney Memorial Scholarship. Accompanying the whole event will be the exhibition "American Glass Now," a showcase of the most recognized stained-glass works from 2015. On a special note is the special event at the spectacular National Cathedral.

Toledo Museum of Art invites visitors to experience “Play Time” with glass and other media

“Play Time,” an interactive exhibit opening on May 22, 2015, at the Toledo Museum of Art, promises to be a participatory art playground for museum-goers. The event is based on the idea that a sense of "play" is an important element of everyday life and helps maintain good health (the event is sponsored by a health organization). Depending on the material, the projects will vary in the amount of viewer participation, and will include everything from a climbable net to a giant rubber ball. For glass artist Kim Harty's Glass Mountain project, which involves layering hot strands of molten glass over itself to create a complex single structure, it will be less of an opportunity for hands-on involvement by the general public, but more of a spectacle or performance. For the project, which will begin on Friday, May 22, and continue over the Memorial Day weekend, Harty intends to interact with the audience in a different wayto create her own unique corner of “play.”

The Glass Art Society establishes Littleton Lecture at the artist organization’s annual conference

The Glass Art Society has announced a new lecture that will become a regular part of its annual conference. Named for the recognized founder of Studio Glass, Harvey Littleton, the lecture will be presented by a glass artist chosen for his or her ability to express individuality in the medium. The inaugural Littleton lecture will be delivered by Therman Statom during the arist association's upcoming conference in San Jose, California, which will take place from June 7th through the 9th with the theme of "Interface: Glass, Art, and Technology."

OPENING: The touring “European Glass Experience” exhibit moves to Venice

On Saturday, April 18th, The Murano Glass Museum in Murano, Italy, will present the final international exhibition of the European Glass Experience project curated by director Chiara Squarcina. After two years of showcasing the artworks and sketches in Finland, Spain, and Portugal, the upcoming show is considered as the most important one due to larger number of artworks and the historic venue. Almost 80 international artists will present their works to the public. On a special note are the sketches, designed by the artists, which were selected by the scientific committee to be produced by Consorzio Promovetro’s Murano glass masters.The exhibition will run through June 7, 2015, with an opening reception on Saturday, April 17th, starting at 6.30 PM with special conference with remarks by Milan Hlaveš, curator at the Museum of decorative arts in Prague, and Gabriella Belli, director of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia and it will continues to the official opening at 7.30 PM. OPENING: Ione Thorkelssohn’s dual exhibitions in Ottowa engage biologies synthetic and natural

On Saturday, April 11th, the L.A. Pai Gallery in Ottowa, Ontario, will present the work of glass sculptor Ione Thorkelssohn at “Emerge Establish Emerge,” a group exhibition showcasing the work of four artists working in two distinct styles: glass sculpture and art jewelry (the other glass artist featured is the kiln-cast work of Cheryl Wilson Smith). An older marine-biology-inspired work by Thorkelssohn, mD31704: partial reconstruction of marine avifauna, will provide an excellent example of her probing of organic forms for universal truths, celebrating the wonder and complexity of the natural world. A concurrent solo exhibition of the Manitoba-based artist's work provides a fascinating counterpoint. Since 2012, when she heard news of a new life form being created in a science lab, Thorkelssohn has wrestled with the implications of this watershed event, one she saw far less debate or discussion of than she expected. Her concerns are given physical form in her solo exhibition "Synthia's Closet," which will be on view at the Ottowa School of Art from April 9 through May 14, 2015.
