Canadian glass artists’ conference to start tomorrow, to end with grand fashion show finale

With an opening ceremony Wednesday evening at 6 PM, the Glass Art Association of Canada will kick off its semi-annual conference taking place this year in Montreal, where a city-wide celebration of glass has filled museums and galleries with exhibitions of art made from glass. Titled “Transparent Transformation,” the conference will run through Sunday, May 30th, and include a Laura Donefer-produced fashion show at the Montreal Science Center on Saturday evening that promises to outdo all previous fashion shows through a partnership with Montreal’s top fashion designers and models as well as newly renovated nonprofit Espace Verre.

Scavenger hunt will send contestants racing to New York City glass landmarks

On Saturday, June 5th, the Urbanites, the age-40-and-under group of supporters of UrbanGlass, will compete in a head-to-head race to find glass treasures scattered across Manhattan. From glass murals in subway stations, to fountains in landmark buildings, to stained glass windows, the all-day GLASS HUNT will mix education with spirited competition.

Corning’s GlassLab will give designers free range to improvise with glass at German design museum

Timed to overlap with Art Basel taking place just four miles across the border from Weil am Rhein, Germany, the Vitra Design Museum will play host to the Corning Museum of Glass’s GlassLab from June 14th to June 20th. GlassLab is a portable, energy-efficient and green hot shop where designers work with a team of experienced glassblowers to bring their sketches to life in front of an audience. Not only does GlassLab provide audiences interested in product design a look into the process of prototyping and refining glass objects, but designers themselves get a chance to work with glass in real time and in real life. This is far different than the virtual world where most design takes place through computer programs. Here, rather than a prototype arriving by mail from an Asian factory weeks later, a harsh reality of our increasingly global design and manufacturing process, designers will have a chance to see first-hand how glass designs intersect with the realities of the hotshop, and modify their plans accordingly.
