CALL FOR PAPERS: UrbanGlass announces October 2015 symposium of academics and educators

Two years after the successful inaugural symposium in December 2013, UrbanGlass is again partnering with the Robert M. Minkoff Foundation to present a gathering of department heads, professors, and educators to discuss best practices in the lecture hall and studio. The upcoming symposium, titled "Issues in Glass Pedagogy: New Technologies in Practice" will be taking place from October 22 -24, 2015 in Brooklyn, New York. The meeting of glass art educators will focus on new technology, with an empahsis on which of the new developments have the most relevance to the practice of glass art. The keynote presentation will be delivered by Tina Aufiero, artistic director of Pilchuck and the former director of the BFA Design & Technology Program at Parsons in New York City. Titled "bits + bytes: migratory investigations," Aufiero's talk aims to discuss the "technological implications for the field of glass."

Rui Sasaki wins the 2015 Jutta Cuny-Franz Memorial Award

Japanese artist Rui Sasaki, who spent time in the U.S. earning her MFA from RISD (2010), has been awarded the 2015 Jutta Cuny-Franz Memorial Award, which comes with a prize of € 10,000 (more than U.S. $ 11,000). The award is given each year to an artist who is under 40, and judges only consider work within the past two years. This year's award saw 164 applications from 28 countries. Two Talent Awards of the Jutta Cuny-Franz Foundation were also given to Maria Bang Espersen of Denmark, and Anne Weber of Germany. Each will receive an award of € 1,500.

OPENING: Close-up, works by Josepha Gasch-Muche reveal their strong emotional qualities

On view at Galerie B in Baden-Baden, Germany, through June 13, 2015 is a solo exhibition of the remarkable glass assemblages of Josepha Gasch-Muche. Titled “Cube,” the gallery show features two new works in addition to several pieces made between 2010 and 2014. Using overlaid thin glass elements, Gasch-Muche invites us into a geometric world where the complex surfaces and intricate lighting veers close to chaos but is ordered and made comprehensible by the careful attention to structure. From a distance, Gasch-Muche’s art pieces look like creations of cold perfection with sharp cutting edges, but they come to life when you come closer to see the sublime tenderness and vulnerability evident in the fragile quality of crystal glass elements.

OPENING: “New Works” from Tobias Møhl debut at Traver

Venetian inspired, but with an unmistakable Scandinavian twist, the glass work of Tobias Møhl is simplistic, yet striking. His blown glass platters, vessels, and bowls, almost exclusively in shades of black, gray, and white, are characterized by lace-like intricacy surrounded by flowing, clean lines. The Danish artist’s newest exhibition—aptly titled “New Works”—will be on display at the Traver Gallery from August 7th through the 31st.

The Canadian and Glass Gallery in Waterloo, Ontario is currently seeking a new curator.

The Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery is searching for a new curator to replace Christian Bernard Singer, who announced his resignation in June. The new curator will be expected to bring their own vision to the Waterloo, Ontario based Gallery, which prides itself on pushing the boundaries, both materially and conceptually.

OPENING: Hiroshi Yamano’s “Branches” exhibition explores natural beauty

Art, at its best, is interpretation. It allows the viewer, for a brief time, to share in the artist’s perspective on reality, be it the physical or the metaphysical — and gain new insights into one's own experience as a result. In the joint exhibition “Branches,” which opens at the LewAllen Galleries in the Santa Fe Railyard on August 8, artists Hiroshi Yamano and Pedro Surroca offer up different perspectives on the understated beauty of tree branches.

New York Metropolitan Glass Club announces speakers for its 2014-2015 season

Since its inception in 1999, the New York Metropolitan Glass Club has met in the Parish Hall of St. Michael’s Church at Amsterdam Avenue and West 99th Street in Manhattan. The interior of St. Michael’s is a sanctuary where glass enthusiasts can connect with each other amongst windows, mosaics, and lamps designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany between 1895 and 1925. Members step into the Upper East Side church on the first Tuesday of every month from October through May to enjoy wine, cheese, and a lecture given by a visiting expert in the glass field. While the first meeting of 2014-2015 is still a couple months away and not all lecture topics have been set in stone yet, the Metropolitan Glass Club has announced its speakers and meeting dates for its upcoming season.

The International Summer Academy Bild-Werk Frauenau will be holding an auction of work from over 100 international artists to support its school and studio facilities.

The International Summer Academy Bild-Werk Frauenau has developed into a prime center for glass art education over the past three decades. Home to the Glasmuseum Frauenau and to Erwin Eisch, considered the founding father of the Studio Glass movement in Europe and one of the founders of the Academy, Frauenau is located in a leading glass region between the Bavarian Forest in Bavaria, Germany, and the Bohemian Forest in the Czech Republic. The Academy began teaching workshops in 1987 with a primary focus on glass art, but has expanded into teaching in other disciplines such as painting, ceramics, wood, and bronze. Studio rentals for artists are available at Bild-Werk as well, making the studio and the region of Frauenau a great resource for artists living in or visiting this part of Germany.

EXHIBITION: Contemporary Glass Society showcases Northern UK glass artists in “Glass in the Bank”

The work of ten glass artists from the Northern United Kingdom is currently on display in “Glass in the Bank”, an exhibition housed in the Lytham Heritage Centre in Lytham St Anne’s, Lancashire in England. The exhibition was organized by Northern Hub of The Contemporary Glass Society, an organization that aims to support both emerging and established artists working in glass and to promote contemporary glass within the scope of the greater art world. To this end, the CGS organizes exhibitions, publishes Glass Network magazine, and holds conferences and workshops.

OPENING: Howard Ben Tré museum exhibition in Tacoma debuts this September

Howard Ben Tré, an artist who redefined the scale possible in glass sculpture with monumental glass totems often accented with metallic foil surfaces, will have a solo exhibition at the Museum of Glass, in Tacoma, Washington. Entitled “Lightness of Being,” the show opens September 14, and has been described as an indoor forest of vertical shapes, featuring towering sculptures cast in glass and bronze, some as much as 8-feet tall. The show seems to reprise work shown in 2012 at the Dennos Sculpture Center in Traverse City, Michigan.

Glass: The UrbanGlass Quarterly, a glossy art magazine published four times a year by UrbanGlass has provided a critical context to the most important artwork being done in the medium of glass for more than 40 years.
