Summer Festival: GlassFest returns to Corning, New York, with its first-ever Flame Off event

To the uninitiated, an event called a “Flame Off” might sound like a heavy metal festival, a fire-safety class, or some sort of convention for fire-blowing circus professionals. But those in the glass world know the truth: A Flame Off is actually a competitive meeting of flameworkers testing their skill in challenge matches. A regular features of the pipe-making gatherings, a somewhat different sort of flame-off will be taking place at the 2011 “GlassFest,” a glass and fine arts festival taking place in Corning, New York during Memorial Day weekend.

UPDATE: Richard Posner murder a “closed case”

The Tucson, Arizona, police department has officially closed its investigation into the Richard Posner murder-suicide. On March 12th, 2011, Posner was found dead of a gunshot in his apartment after police went to his home to check on the welfare of its residents. Sergeant Judy Allen of the Tucson Police Department’s Homicide Detail told the GLASS Quarterly Hot Sheet that the previously unidentified woman found dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot has since been identified as Posner’s girlfriend, Sabine Schulte.

DESIGN: The Empire State Building’s new glass installation references its Machine Age history

Visitors entering the Empire State Building from the 34th Street entrance and approaching the information desk are greeted by a glass art installation entitled Circle In by Brooklyn glass artist Denise Amses of Amses Cosma Studios. The 16-panel, etch-glass art installation measures 13-feet-wide by 5-feet-high and weighs almost 2,900 pounds. Completed after 12 months of work by Amses, the panels are the final element in a $20 million lobby renovation by Malkin Holdings, owner of the iconic building. “It was always part of our conception of the lobby to place this specially commissioned art installation at the focal point of tenant reception of the recreated lobby,” said Anthony E. Malkin of Empire State Building Company in a prepared statement. “Now, it is finally in place as the final touch of the Empire State Building’shistoric lobby restoration project.”
