Full Program Released for the 2015 Robert M. Minkoff Foundation Academic Symposium at UrbanGlass

The full schedule for the 2015 Robert M. Minkoff Foundation Academic Symposium at UrbanGlass — complete with times, dates, and maps — has just been released. Among the highlights of this year's symposium, which has the theme of "New Technologies in Practice," is a Chelsea gallery tour that includes stops at Andrea Rosen Gallery to discuss Josiah McElheny's latest work, Sean Kelly Gallery to hear about Idris Khan's recent work in glass, and Heller Gallery for a presentation of new work by April Surgent as well as a panel discussion on the challenges of taking over a glass program and inheriting its technology. Panelists include glass program heads Helen Lee (UWisconsin, Madison), Kim Harty (CCA, Detroit), Marc Petrovic (CIA, Cleveland), and Sharyn O'Mara (Tyler, Philadelphia). A reception at the loft of a downtown art collector will cap off the first day's activities.

A major new glass museum prepares to open in Prague in 2016

Europe will gain a major new museum devoted to glass when ZIBA - The Prague Glass Experience Museum opens in 2016 in the center of the historic city of Prague in the Czech Republic. Designed to be an inspiring experience of visual art, design and innovative technology in contemporary glass will present the material with an emphasis on its prominence in Czech history. The museum will connect glass art with its role in design, crafts, technology, architecture, and other creative disciplines across the industry, including education and entertainment. Though the official opening is still more than a year away, the venue is already hosting interesting exhibitions and events in preparation.

Summer courses announced by the International Academy at Bild-Werk Frauenau

Bild-Werk Frauenau, the educational hub of glass making in the German-Czech region, has announced the 2015 summer schedule for interdisciplinary courses. Starting in April and May (depending on the course) and running through September, lectures and courses on hot glass, kiln casting, glass engraving and more will be available in the one- to two-and-a-half week classes. This year, the program aims to incorporate a crossover of techniques, especially in hot glass and ceramics. The objective of the experimental learning process is for students to “develop individual artistic potential,” as stated on the school’s website.

College for Creative Studies names Kim Harty head of glass program

The College for Creative Studies in Detroit has announced the appointment of Kim Harty to head the private college's glass program. Harty, whose title will be assistant professor in the college's craft department, will take over from Herb Babcock, who had led the glass section since 1974 until his recent retirement. Harty will be leading the glass program starting with the fall semester 2014, and will be part of a new generation of glass artists assuming academic positions in college and university art programs. She holds an MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago (2013) and a BFA from RISD (2006). Harty is currently a board member at the Glass Art Society and editor of the organization's GASNews publication. (Disclosure: Kim Harty is also the former managing editor of GLASS: The UrbanGlass Art Quarterly.)

Boisbuchet Summer Design Workshop in France offers students hands-on hot glass

Harkening back to the salons that characterized 17th and 18th century France, Boisbuchet's Summer of Design workshops will run from June 15th through September 13th, bringing together students and teachers from the fields of architecture and design to share share ideas, inspiration, and techniques. Though, instead of the crowded drawing rooms of Enlightenment Paris, this annual series of workshops will be held at Domaine de Boisbuchet, an historic estate in the south-west of France.

GlassRoots expands program to at-risk youth with new scientific glassblowing apprenticeship

GlassRoots is an organization that devotes itself to fanning the embers of creativity in young people until they burn hot enough to forge bright futures. Since its inception in early 2001, the nonprofit based in Newark, New Jersey has worked to teach at-risk youth the importance of teamwork, self-reliance, and entrepreneurial skills through glassmaking. The discipline required to transform glass into art carries over into other aspects of their lives, giving them the confidence and determination to succeed. The focus has been on glass art, with training in business skills important to careers in the arts but applicable to a wide range of careers. Now, thanks to a generous grant from the Agnes Varis Charitable Trust, this community outreach program will be able to further expand that reach with a new apprenticeship in scientific glassblowing.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: The Toyama City Institute of Glass Art Seeks 2014 Artist-in-Residence

The Toyama City Institute of Glass Art in Japan is now accepting applications for its Artist-in-Residence Program, which will take place later this year from October 20 through November 30, 2014. Located on the northwest coast of Japan, Toyama prides itself on being a "Glass Art City", with the school positioned in a creative environment ideal for studying the craft.

Marc Petrovic hired to chair glass department at Cleveland Institute of Art

After an international search, the Cleveland Institute of Art has hired Marc Petrovic to chair its glass program, selecting him from the 35 qualified applicants for the position. The artist, a Cleveland native and alumnus of CIA, will join its faculty as an assistant professor for the upcoming Fall semester, taking over for his former professor and the longtime glass department chair Brent-Kee Young, who is retiring after 41 years. Petrovic will be relocating from Connecticut, where he has lived and worked for the past 20 years, and returning to the city where he was born, and where he earned his B.F.A. from CIA in 1991.

Winner of the 2014 Borowsky Prize, Helen Lee will lecture at UArts

The inaugural Irvin Borowsky Prize in Glass Arts, an annual juried award that includes a $5,000 gift, was won by artist and University of Wisconsin, Madison, assistant professor Helen Lee. As part of the 2014 prize, she will deliver a special lecture at 6:30 this evening at University of the Arts's CBS Auditorium in Dorrance Hamilton Hall. Lee holds a BSAD in architecture from the Massachusetts Institute for Technology and an MFA from RISD.

Glass: The UrbanGlass Quarterly, a glossy art magazine published four times a year by UrbanGlass has provided a critical context to the most important artwork being done in the medium of glass for more than 40 years.
