Coburg Glass Prize awarded to Danish artist Karen Lise Krabbe

The fourth Coburg Prize for Contemporary Glass was awarded over the weekend, with the top honor including a 15,000 Euro (more than US$ 20,000) prize going to Karen Lise Krabbe of Denmark. Open to European artists working with glass, the richest prize in glass is awarded at multi-year intervals. The first was given in 1977, followed by 1985, and 2006. Second prize was awarded to American Jeff Zimmer (currently living in Scotland and thus qualifying for the competition). Sylvie Vandenhoucke of Belgium won third prize.

Winner of the 2014 Borowsky Prize, Helen Lee will lecture at UArts

The inaugural Irvin Borowsky Prize in Glass Arts, an annual juried award that includes a $5,000 gift, was won by artist and University of Wisconsin, Madison, assistant professor Helen Lee. As part of the 2014 prize, she will deliver a special lecture at 6:30 this evening at University of the Arts's CBS Auditorium in Dorrance Hamilton Hall. Lee holds a BSAD in architecture from the Massachusetts Institute for Technology and an MFA from RISD.

Artist Mel Douglas wins Australia’s Tom Malone Prize

The Tom Malone Prize, which that promotes the creation, appreciation, and enjoyment of glass made in Australia, has been awarded to the country's top glass artists since its inception in 2003. The prize-winning entry is acquired by the State Art Collection and includes a $12,000 cash award as well. This year’s winning entry, titled Camber, was created by Mel Douglas, and judged by the Governor of the Art Gallery of Western Australia Elizabeth Malone, glass artist David Hay, AGWA’s Director Stefano Carboni, and AGWA’s Curator of Modern and Contemporary Photography and Design, Robert Cook.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: David Dunlap Observatory in Ontario seeks proposals for glass award

The Dunlap Institute for Astronomy & Astrophysics at the University of Toronto, as part of a public outreach effort of the David Dunlap Observatory in Ontario, will be awarding its inaugural Dunlap Prize to Neil deGrasse Tyson on March 21st, 2014 in recognition of his magnanimous efforts in public education, science engagement, and science advocacy.The Dunlap Institute has announced a call for expressions of interest in crafting the award component of the prize. Glass artists are sought out in particular for their choice of media, which evokes imagery of stars and starlight due to its refractive qualities. “A glass object reflects and refracts; it can act as a lens, a mirror, and a prism—all critical components in the telescopes and instruments astronomers use to study the Universe,” the announcement states.

Nikolas Weinstein Studios wins hospitality design award for hotel installation in Hong Kong

Nikolas Weinstein Studios, based in San Francisco, California, was awarded the grand prize in the “Judges’ So Cool” category for its sculptural glass installation in the Courtyard by Marriot, Hong Kong Sha Tin. The recognition was part of the 33rd annual Gold Key Awards for Excellence in Hospitality Design, centering specifically on hotel design and architecture.
