Pâte de Verre: Reliefs, Freeze & Fuse

Explore the possibilities of Pâte de Verre! This kiln-formed glass technique uses finely crushed glass frit mixed with water and a binding agent to form a "paste" which is applied to the surface of a refractory mold,to create delicate, layered forms and reliefs. Over six weeks, students will experiment with creating relief sculptures using clay as a base material, while also discovering the exciting possibilities of basic freeze-and-fuse techniques. You will learn how to make refractory molds, prepare colored glass paste, build up layers of glass, sift glass to create different effects, and experiment with freezing glass into unique forms. The course will guide you through the complete process, from developing your own designs and making molds to preparing, layering, and firing your glass in the kiln.

By the end of the six weeks, each student will have developed their own designs and gained practical experience taking a Pâte de Verre piece from initial concept through to a finished glass object.

What to Expect: Participants can expect to leave with 4 finished objects plus sample tiles, this varies depending on the participant's choices and size of the piece. Pieces can ́t be bigger than 6/ 7 inches in any direction due to size and space inside the kiln. Clean-up time is included in the duration of class, and usually the last 20 minutes of class are dedicated to cleaning your workstation. Kilnforming work involves a mix of seated and standing activities. A particulate respirator mask is required when working with fine glass powders or unloading kilns after firing and would be provided for you if needed. Eligibility: No previous experience required. Open to ages 14 and up.

Pick-up: The glass needs to be fused in the kiln and cool down overnight, so the students will have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up their work. 

This is an in-person class taking place on-site at UrbanGlass. 

We recommend registering for classes early to reserve your spot! We base materials, and teacher needs off of student enrollment. Early registration not only guarantees your spot in class, but also helps to ensure the class will run. Classes with low enrollment may be canceled within two weeks of the start date of class.
