Now Hiring: Teaching Artists for Make Your Own Glass Experiences

UrbanGlass is seeking experienced glass artists to join our team of Make Your Own Glass Teaching Artists. Teaching Artists will guide participants through short-format glassmaking experiences, creating a welcoming, educational, and memorable introduction to glass. Participants will choose from beginner-friendly glass projects and work alongside UrbanGlass Teaching Artists to create their own handmade glass object. This role requires a unique combination of technical glassmaking skill, communication, hospitality, and customer service. 

General tasks to expect: 

  • Lead participants through a safe, engaging, and approachable glassmaking experience.
  • Share knowledge of glassmaking while adapting teaching approaches for first-time participants.
  • Guide beginners through the glassmaking process with patience, encouragement, and enthusiasm.
  • Create assigned projects consistently, efficiently, and safely while maintaining high-quality standards.
  • Support event flow by preparing materials, loading work, making punties, and assisting with project completion.
  • Welcome guests, answer questions, and help participants feel comfortable in a professional glass studio environment.
  • Maintain excellent communication and customer service throughout the participant experience.
  • Work collaboratively with the Make Your Own Glass team to ensure sessions run smoothly.
  • Represent UrbanGlass with professionalism, warmth, and enthusiasm.
  • Because Make Your Own Glass experiences are scheduled back-to-back, Teaching Artists must be able to manage time effectively, maintain a consistent pace, and adapt quickly when unexpected situations arise, including late arrivals or changes to the schedule.

You’ll feel ready for this role if you: 

  • Can demonstrate proficiency in glassblowing and the ability to confidently create assigned projects consistently, safely, and efficiently.
  • Have experience working in a hot shop environment and a strong understanding of glassblowing tools, techniques, and safety practices.
  • Have the ability to share your knowledge of glassmaking with beginners in an approachable and encouraging way.
  • Have experience teaching, demonstrating, mentoring, or engaging with students, visitors, or community members.
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Are friendly, patient, and have a welcoming approach to working with the public.
  • Have the ability to balance technical expertise with hospitality, flexibility, and guest engagement.
  • Have strong time management skills and the ability to maintain quality and enthusiasm in a fast-paced environment.

Hiring Process

Applicants selected for consideration will be invited to participate in a practical working interview as part of the hiring process. The working interview will include time in the hot shop and a run-through of the Make Your Own Glass experience. Candidates should be prepared to demonstrate their glassblowing skills, complete sample projects, and demonstrate their ability to guide and engage with first-time participants. We are looking for team members who can not only create excellent glass, but also create a welcoming, exciting, and memorable experience for every visitor.

Schedule

Make Your Own Glass experiences will run twice weekly:

  • Sundays (morning sessions, 10-1)
  • Wednesdays (morning sessions, 10-1)

Each session requires a four-hour commitment.

Teaching Artists should be available for consistent scheduling and prepared to work in a fast-paced, guest-centered studio environment. There are some days in the year where there will not be Make Your Own Experience sessions due to other commitments like visiting artist intensives, holidays, etc.  The 2027 schedule likely to start in January.  Orientations and training will happen in fall 2026.

Compensation

Compensation for this role is $45/hr for the listed class time (3 hrs)  and 1 hr of prep/clean up at the prep rate of $30/hr.
