For its first meeting of 2016, the recently renamed Art Glass Forum will host artist Michael Glancy, who will deliver a talk about his work which references natural environments at micro and macro scale. With titles draw from the natural sciences, Glancy's glass works are intensively coldworked — sandblasted, cut with acid, and then selectively electroplated with metals. The results resemble magnified ceullar landscapes, or possibly geological formations, which exhibit convincing organic contours.
On the faculty of the Rhode Island School of Design for 34 years, Glancy holds a B.F.A. from the University of Denver (1973), and took courses with Dale Chihuly when the elder artist taught at RISD. A National Endowment of the Arts fellow, Glancy's work can be found at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Corning Museum of Glass, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
From October through May, the Art Glass Forum meets the first Tuesday of each month at St. Michael’s Church on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Many evenings there is an impromptu tour of the church's notable Tiffany windows.
