Shaken Not Stirred

January 5th - January 9th
Ben Wright |

In this workshop we will explore the glass studio as a laboratory for giving material flight to our wildest ideas. Through studio experimentation, technical innovation, project prototyping, group brainstorming sessions and the interjection of chance into our process, we will guide ourselves and our colleagues along unexplored paths to arrive at new and important work. This workshop is well suited for all experience levels, from those curious about the possibilities of glass as a material, to those feeling stuck and looking for a new perspective.  Because of the compressed nature of the workshop, I request that you arrive with an open mind and an active sketchbook practice, having identified several ideas you have been dying to explore. These will act as a generative launchpads for open ended studio investigations. The Instructor and TA will offer demos and technical guidance as you set up your experiments. During class and worktime, students will have access to all studios (flat, mold making, cold shop, kiln) except the hot shop where they will each have the rare opportunity of a single prototyping session with an expert glassblower.

Additional work time for intensive students: Students will also have access to additional hours in the flat, cold, an mold shops, without instruction, on Tuesday - Friday from 5-8pm. Students must be able to work safely in the studio, and be able to set up their area without needing instruction. Students participating in student hours will need to be approved by the instructor and TA’s.

What to Expect: Read more about how to prepare for class on our Registration Info page.  To learn more about accessibility the Accessibility page on our website.

Eligibility: This class is open to both new and experienced glass artists. No prior glass experience is required, but students should be interested in an experimental investigation into the material that is informed by traditional craft techniques but does not seek their mastery. This class would be well suited to artists and designers who are curious about working with glass, as well as experienced glass artists looking to challenge their usual ways of working. Open to ages 14 and up.

Pick-up: The glass needs to cool down overnight, so the students will have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up their work.

We recommend registering for classes early to reserve your spot! We base materials, and teacher needs off of student enrollment. Early registration not only guarantees your spot in class, but also helps to ensure the class will run. Classes with low enrollment may be cancelled within two weeks of the start date of class. Contact our Registrar of Education, Ari Eshoo, at arianna@urbanglass.org if you have questions about the class or would like to arrange a payment plan.
