Inspired by beautiful patterns and graphic design? Interested in trying a single day intensive into hot glass shaping? This is the perfect combination experience for you. Spend a Saturday evening learning everything you need to gather, shape and stamp hot glass onto your chosen design and then turn it into a functional small bowl. The perfect size for holding your favorite candy, keys, business cards, incense, or anything else you have while decorating your space exquisitely. In the first half of the class we'll spend time getting you comfortable in our studio and handling the molten glass from solid to hollow until we break for a meal. Afterwards we will sit down to discuss what kind of design will work best for our technique of powder printing color onto the bowls and then either select a stencil from our collection or create your own. Finally we'll head back into the hotshop to demonstrate the full making process and then begin guiding you through it yourselves 1 on 1 with our instructors. Each person will get the opportunity to design one piece from start to finish and then the following day come take home their creation after the piece has cooled overnight. If you already have a specific stencil you would like to use, keeping in mind a roughly 4"x4" design area capacity, feel free to bring it in and we can try it as well.
What to Expect: Students will work together and learn to manipulate molten glass (2000 degrees). Safety, color application, and tools will all be covered in a fun and exciting environment. The hot shop is a loud studio, and can get quite warm. Glassblowing involves a variety of activities including sitting, standing, and working with hot glass. The environment can be very hot and loud at times. Handling glass and tools may require a certain level of dexterity and ability to lift 5-10 lbs approximately. Read more about how to prepare for class on our Registration Info page. To learn more about accessibility the Accessibility page on our website.
Eligibility: No previous experience required. Open to ages 14 and up.
Pick-up: The glass needs to cool down overnight, so the students will have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up their work.
