High School Camp! Intro to Neon (FREE - STEM)

July 7th - July 18th
James Akers |

Did you know all neon signs are handmade from glass tubing? Light up the summer with a glowing neon masterpiece of your own design! Beginning with an exploration of how noble gasses interact with electrical currents to produce light, students will investigate the technical and aesthetic aspects of this unique functional art form. Working with various torches to weld and bend glass tubes, students will move through the entire process of bringing their ideas to life; from inspiration, to design, to fabrication. Immersed in the exciting world of a professional art studio, students will also learn about other ways of working with glass, discover creative careers in art, design, education and entrepreneurship, and see how art and science intersect through the fascinating material properties of glass.

This is a FREE camp offered in collaboration with STEM Matters NYC, a Dept. of Education program that partners with cultural institutions to provide enrichment programs during spring and summer break for students in grades K-12. This program is open to NYC public and charter school students entering grades 10-12. Spots are limited and application based. Selections are made by a review committee, and the application requires an online teacher reference form. Learn more here. For questions, contact STEMMattersNYC@schools.nyc.gov.The application deadline is Friday, May 9th! Apply here: https://nycdoe.campintouch.com/ui/forms/application/camper/App
