Intro to Boro: Starting Big

In this introductory borosilicate class, students will learn to use solid glass rod as a structural material. Much like constructing a house we will use the glass to "frame up" our constructions and learn to draw with material to create compositions. Working from simple frameworks to more complex compositions, we'll explore how individual components can be combined to create larger, dynamic objects through an additive approach.

Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of borosilicate flameworking, including torch safety, heat control, clean seals, and strategies for accurate construction. Through a series of project-based exercises, you'll gain confidence at the torch while developing an understanding of borosilicate as a material for building. The main goal will be to work in a self sustaining way to accomplish our flameworking goals at any scale.

Artists to look at using these techniques would be: Anna Skibska, Kari Russel-Pool, and Eunsuh Choi.

No Experience Required.

What to expect:  Flameworking with borosilicate glass requires a little practice at heat control with the torch to create successful sculptures. After demonstrations, students will have time on the torch to hone their skills. Clean-up time is included in the duration of class, and usually the last 20 minutes of class are dedicated to cleaning your workstation. While flameworking, participants primarily engage in seated activities such as working with glass rods and torches. The environment can be bright and loud at times. Eligibility: Suitable for students with basic flameworking and beadmaking experience who are ready to move beyond solid sculpture. Open to ages 14 and up. 

Pick-up: The glass needs to cool down overnight, so the students will have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up their work. 

We recommend registering for classes early to reserve your spot! We base materials, and teacher needs off of student enrollment. Early registration not only guarantees your spot in class, but also helps to ensure the class will run. Classes with low enrollment may be cancelled within two weeks of the start date of class.
