Meeting the first Tuesday of the month, from Fall through the Spring, the New York Metropolitan Glass Club brings together historic and contemporary glass collectors, dealers, and enthusiasts for a monthly lecture presented at an Upper West Side church that features a number of significant Tiffany windows. The setting will be especially appropriate for the upcoming April 7th meeting, in which design historian, GLASS magazine contributor, and educator Susie Silbert discusses the relationship between the legendary designer Louis Comfort Tiffany and the Studio Glass movement.
Silbert will pay special attention to the work of North Carolina glassmaker Mark Peiser, who, according to the event announcement, "taught himself to blow glass by creating works based on Tiffany-inspired forms, much as if they were scales on a piano." Silbert, who used to work as Peiser's studio assistant, will look at the way contemporary artists working in glass are looking both forwards and backwards, using artists such as Shari Mendelson and Stefanie Pender (both of whom were in Silbert's recently curated exhibition at UrbanGlass "Material Location") as examples.
Silbert holds a Master’s degree in decorative arts and material culture from the Bard Graduate Center. She is currently at work on an exhibition for the New School of Design at Parsons, and lectures regularly on the history of glass at the Rhode Island School of Design.
Membership in the New York Metropolitan Glass Club ranges from $25 for students to $90 for a family. Non-members can attend lectures for $15, and this fee can be applied toward the annual membership. Doors open at 6:30 PM for an informal wine and cheese reception, and the presentation begins at 7 PM. For more information, visit the organizations' Web site.
