This weekend, the nonprofit fire arts center in San Francisco known as The Crucible will host a two-day event honoring the 50 years history of Studio Glass from a West Coast perspective. With keynote presentations by Suellen Fowler, Marvin Lipofsky, Richard Marquis, and Susan Stimsmuehlen-Amend, the two-day event promises to be a journey back in time. In fact, the structure of the event was inspired by the California Glass Exchanges, a technique-sharing gathering of the California glass community organized by San Jose State University glass instructor Robert C. Fritz and his student George Jercich.

The event kicks off on Saturday, November 10th, at 10 AM, with keynotes by Marquis and Stimsmuehlen-Amend, and then continues with demos in the Crucible’s six glass shops, which include blowing, cold working, fusing, casting, neon and flameworking areas. There will also be panel discussions and lectures, capped off with an awards ceremony on Saturday at 6 PM, which will begin by a second keynote by Marvin Lipofsky. An exhibition of California glass artists’ work will be on view both days of the event, and a “Living Glass Timeline” will be created as part of the proceedings. The event Website offers tickets, and those who register will be inclued in a directory of California glass artists that will be compiled as part of the two-day event.

The event is sponsored by The Crucible, The Glass Alliance of Northern California, the Art Alliance for Contemporary Glass, Denny Abrams, the Glass Art Society, and the Clay and Glass Arts Foundation.
