OPENING:The Brychtovà Forum celebrates women in glass, including one of the field’s most import

Stanislav Libensky & Jaroslava Brychtova, Study for a Girl's Head, 1959-1986. Blown glass. H 14 1/2, W 7, D 2 1/2 in.

One of the most famous and influential women in glass, Jaroslava Brychtovà, will be speaking and presenting at a four-day forum in Seattle named in her honor. Taking place at the Seattle Art Museum, Traver Gallery, and at the Pratt Fine Arts CenterThe Brychtovà Forum — Women Artists Working in Glass: Celebrating Innovation and Vision Across Generations“ begins today, July 15th, and runs through July 18th. The forum will feature free lectures and panel discussions, and be supported by an exhibition at the Traver Gallery curated by Sarah Traver that includes work by Nancy Blair, Sonja Blomdahl, Jaroslava Brychtovà, Marianne Buus, Nancy Callan, Rebecca Chernow, Nadege Desgenetez, Jen Elek, Jeannet Iskandar, Masami Koda, Karen LaMonte, Beth Lipman, Flora Mace & Joey Kirkpatrick, Rachel Moore, Debora Moore, Shelley Muzylowski-Allen, Sibylle Peretti, Flo Perkins, Jenny Pohlman & Sabrina Knowles, Amy Rueffert, Kait Rhoads, Ginny Ruffner, Laura de Santillana, Susan Stinsmuehlen-Amend, April Surgent, Cappy Thompson, Mary Van Cline, Karen Willenbrink-Johnsen.

The certain highlight of “The Brychtovà Forum” will be the event’s opening address this evening by Brychtovà herself (now taking place at Benaroya Hall) in which she will speak about her decades of collaboration with her late husband, Stanislav Libensky. The duo worked together since 1954 in a division of labor that saw Libensky creating designs through painting and sketching, while Brychtovà realized the two-dimensional work in clay sculptures that formed the basis for the molds that would produce the cast-glass works they are known for. The results can be seen here on their website.

Along with discussions and lectures, current glass artists will have an opportunity to watch a documentary film on Brychtovà‘s career that will be screened twice during the forum. Admission to the movie, as to many of the events, is free but registration is required at www.pratt.org/happenings/forum.html.

In addition, a documentary will be filmed during the forum, in which individual artists will be interviewed about their “influences, motivations, inspirations and motivations and visions for their work and the future of glass.” (All the spaces for this project are currently filled.)
