Since opening in November 2015 in a 8,500-square-foot space in downtown Norfolk, Virginia, Glass Wheel Studio has offered exhibition galleries and affordable studio spaces to artists working in all materials but especially glass, a material that has received special focus in this town thanks to the bold programming and outreach of the Chrysler Museum of Art glass studio. In fact, the first 13 artists admitted to the nonprofit Glass Wheel Studio's "immersive studio practice program," includes several artists with connections to the museum's glass department, including its director Charlotte Potter.
Glass Wheel Studio is a driving force behind the creation of "The NEON," which is the name given to Norfolk’s nascent arts district. The organization bills itself as an "incubator for artists, offering subsidized studio space, access to equipment, and exhibition opportunities. Among its list of philosophy and goals are collaboration, craft, respect for history, and sensitivity to the local community.
The new exhibition will feature the work of the current Studio Artists, who are Caitlin Blomstrom, Maggie Bush, Ali Feeney, Gayle Forman, Randy Hess, Hannah Kirkpatrick, Heidi Peelen, Charlotte Potter, Evelyn Robertson, Neal Robinson, Jennifer Sleeper, Amanda Page Stephens, and Sarah Vaughn. Glimpses of the artists and their work are available on the video below.
