With Flying Colors

June 16th - June 17th
Madeline Rile Smith |

This class will explore the broad possibilities of color application in borosilicate glass. We will cover an array of color techniques that can be applied to almost anything you would want to make, including figurative sculpture, pendants, and more. Demonstrations will include raking and feathering, implosions, “galaxy technique”, twisty cane, using a stringer to write on glass, and cold-color applications. We will use these techniques to make pendants, marbles, and human- and nature-inspired forms. This class will address flame chemistry for striking and reducing colors, and how to encase cadmium colors to prevent boiling. We will cover methods for both solid and hollow implosions to take them to the next level. Students will develop flame control to create fine detail and enhance their torchworking abilities.
