The Act of the Table

November 16th, 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm

This event is sold out.

On Saturday, November 16th The Burnt Asphalt Family will present The Act of the Table at UrbanGlass, where the process of preparing food becomes a spectacle, as hot glass melts, bakes, sautés, and flambés appetizers and desserts for audience members to enjoy.

Each Burnt Asphalt Family performance explores the intersection of consumption and creativity for a unique experience that bridges the gap between the spectacle and collaboration of contemporary glassblowing, the intimacy of a dinner party, and the festivity of a celebration. The Act of the Table will examine notions of family structure, and the dinner table as a place of gathering, by building an edible and interactive installation that the audience will be invited to eat and deconstruct.

The Burnt Asphalt Family is a collective of as many as 30 professional artists, fabricators, designers, educators, students and chefs who have performed together since 2007.  Glass, food and found materials form the basis of the Family’s performances, interactive installations and temporary sculpture. The dinner table and the hot glass studio operate as metaphors for community where the audience is a vital part of the performance, challenging ideals of craftsmanship, as well as preconceptions of materials, process, studio practice and family structure.

This will be Burnt Asphalt’s third performance at UrbanGlass’ 647 Fulton Street Studio. The Burnt Asphalt Family’s performances have taken place in glass blowing studios across the country, among them WheatonArts, Wheaton, NJ (2007); UrbanGlass, Brooklyn, NY (2008, 2009); University of Louisville, KY (2008); The Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, NY (2009); the Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, VA (2011); and Pittsburgh Glass Center, Pittsburgh, PA (2011).

Doors open at 7:45; Performance at 8 pm; Dinner and Party at 9 pm.
