Kilncasting with Zircar Mold Mix 6

July 16th - July 20th
Brooke Hamling |

In this summer intensive students will get an introduction to kilncasting glass using Zircar Mold Mix 6 molds. Zircar Mold Mix 6 is a high temperature ceramic mold material used to make lightweight, strong, reusable molds for glass casting and blowing. During this workshop students will create original designs and make reusable molds using Zircar Mold Mix 6 that will allow the replication of these compositions in glass. These molds will be loaded with glass and cast into their final shapes in the kiln.

What to Expect: During this workshop students will make several Zircar Mold Mix 6 molds based on original designs. These molds will be built up around hand carved panels of linoleum and can be used for multiple castings. After these molds are allowed to dry, the class will prepare these molds for the kiln. Students will learn about the process of kilncasting and how to create a firing schedule for their unique casting project.  The students can expect to leave the session with the skills to make a Zircar Mold Mix 6 mold, their reusable molds, and the glass objects they cast during the session. The class will include demonstrations, but students will make their own molds based on original designs and will prepare their castings independently. Read more about how to prepare for class on our Registration Info page.

Eligibility: No previous experience required. Open to ages 14 and up.

This is an in-person class taking place on-site at UrbanGlass. Health and safety guidelines will be emailed to you upon registration.

Additional work time for intensive students: Students will also have access to additional hours in the studio, without instruction, on Wednesday - Saturday from 1-4pm.
