Buds ‘n’ Slugs: Making a Glassy Garden
June 10th, 11:00 am – 5:00 pmLucas Kernan |
This is a one-day introductory level solid sculpting course. In this course you will learn or re-learn the fundamentals of gathering and shaping solid glass. After learning a set of basic shapes, students will transition this knowledge to sculpting a variety of different garden-themed objects ranging from flowers, mushrooms, and caterpillars, to slugs/snails and butterflies for those students with more glassblowing experience.
What to Expect: This class is suitable for all levels of beginning glassblower, whether you have taken an introductory course or never touched the medium before. The teachers will cover all the basics with you and then help you evaluate which of the 4-6 objects are within your skillset, but taking risks is encouraged regardless! Students should be prepared to sweat and come with plenty of water. Please do not wear any clothing made of synthetic material as we will be using torches and cutting bits of glass. Sketch books are recommended but not required, they can be very useful to concretize ideas before sculpting. The class will feature about an hour total of demonstration with the remainder going to student work time. Plan to take home 2 - 5 objects each depending on which level of difficulty you choose. Read more about how to prepare for class on our Registration Info page.
Eligibility: No previous experience required. Open to ages 14 and up.
Pick-up: The glass needs to cool down overnight, so the students will have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up their work.
This is an in-person class taking place on-site at UrbanGlass. Health and safety guidelines will be emailed to you upon registration.
