The gleaming 10,000-square-foot glass studio of the Tyler College of Art.

Starting at noon on Thursday, November 18th, the Tyler School of Art will be turning up the gas at its 10,000-square-foot studio for a marathon blowing and hot-casting session designed to raise money to bring visiting artists to Philadelphia. Recently relocated to Temple University’s main campus, in a brand-new facility, the massive, double-500-pound-furnace-powered studio custom-designed by Carlos Jimenez will be operating at maximum capacity for 24 hours straight. Tyler faculty (Sharyn Omara, Dan Cutrone, Jessica Jane Julius, and Bohyun Yoon) as well as grad students (David Kind, Amber Cowan, Emma Salamon, and Daniel Petraitis) will man their battle stations, keeping all four glory holes operating until noon on Friday. The extensive cold shop, flameworking, and kiln-forming equipment will also be turned on.

The studio’s doors will be open to undergrad glass students as well as Philadelphia-area glass artists, who will be making work as well as doing some performance artwork. Keep checking the Tyler School of Art Glass blog for a link to view the goings-on live. Money raised will support the programs visiting artist series which has already brought Gianni Tosso, Tina Oldknow (curator of modern glass at The Corning Museum of Glass), Alissia Melka-Teichroew (founder and creative director of byAMT Inc) to Philadelphia.
