Artist Jessica Calderwood, a sculptor involved primarily in metalwork, has spent the past decade develping a series of intricately enameled works. These glass-on-metal sculptures and pieces of jewelery will open as the exhibition "Floral Fictions: Recent Work by Jessica Calderwood," at the Society of Arts and Crafts (SAC) Exhibition Gallery in Boston on January 31, 2014.
Calderwood — who has been featured in several publications throughout her career thus far, including Metalsmith, American Craft, and the Art of Enameling — received her BFA and MFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art and Arizona State University, respectively, with an emphasis on metalworking. She is currently an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Calderwood’s work, noted for its exploration of the multiple facets of the human experience, has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. Some other series include the "Flower" series, the "Consumption" series, and the "Body" series, all of which depict, through individual installations, a whimsical take on everyday life.
"Floral Fictions" is a collection of work that includes sculptures and pieces of jewelry, and was created over time. The work possesses the same keen observations of life, combining “flower and botanical forms with fragments of the human body to address the narrative of human life cycles: change, growth, aging, and death,” according to a prepared statement. The exhibition also includes portraits of the artist’s working process, which are shown through sketches and collages.
The exhibition will open on Friday, January 31st, and will run through April 19th, 2014. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, closed on Sunday.
