Opening April 7th, and running through the end of the month at Traver Gallery in Seattle, a new exhibition by Preston Singletary will unveil new forms that marry traditional Northwest Coast Native American imagery with new glass shapes. Entited "Journey Through the Fire (and in to the World)," the exhibition's work employs Modernist vessel forms as three-dimensional canvases for the artist's ongoing study of Native American iconography — specifically Tlingit Formline art.
"This show reflects my current thought process. I enjoy mixing the process of glass blowing, sculpting and designing NW coast art styles and fire is the driving force behind this process," says Singletary in a written statement. "'Journey across the fire (and into the world)' are my poetic attempts at expressing this interaction. In this show I’m exploring new traditional and contemporary forms and Modernist vessels which evoke traditional designs. Each object for me symbolizes my connection to my culture and the opportunity to share a lyrical and new perspective."
In 2009, the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Washington, organized a major mid-career survey entitled "Preston Singletary: Echoes, Fire, and Shadows," which travelled to museums throughout North America. Singletary is currently working on a second retrospective museum exhibition scheduled to open in the spring of 2017.
