OPENING: Glass and iron duet by Jan Kruse at inaugural exhibition at new Berlin nonprofit arts space

Jan Lambert Kruse, Acupuncoon, 2010. Iron, glass.

Tomorrow evening, Swedish artist Jan Lambert Kruse‘s sharp metal and punctured glass artwork will be on view as part of the first exhibition of Berlin nonprofit Das Direktorenhaus, a place where “traditional art and craft methods will be coupled with analogue technology and digital media,” according to the facility’s Website. Kruse’s forms, glass blown into spiky iron molds, create tension on a number of levels, and provide an interesting contrast to the main exhibition of illustrations by Olaf Hajek.

“I am working on two different themes,” Kruse told the Hot Sheet in an email response to questions. “One is with hot glass blown into an iron thread cage. The cage has pointed iron thread spikes or needles. I then blow the glass in the cage the needles are pushed into the glass, leaving the glass bubble hanging in the cage for a series I call “Acupuncoons.”

Kruse’s other theme is to form various glass shapes, which, after annealing, are attached to a thick iron pipe sculpture.
