North Lands releases 2010 Conference and Master Class schedule

Organized around the theme of “Form,” the North Lands Creative Glass 2010 Conference and Master Classes program will feature a diverse lineup of five artists working in glass and one in clay, whose technical and expressive abilities may well make the epic trek to the windswept Northeast coast of Scotland worth the flight and long drive to get to the former fishing village of Caithness.

Stretching from June through September will be a series of week-long master classes by the breathtakingly wide range of artists including kiln-former Catherine Newell, ceramicist Magdalene Odundo, sculptor Anna Matousková, and caricaturist sculptor David Reekie, as well as a class taught jointly by two of the best pure glassblowers in the U.S., Dante Marioni & Benjamin Moore.

All the artists will make presentations during a two-day weekend conference on September 4th and 5th that winds up the 2010 series. The artists will be joined by museum curators who will make presentations. The conference keynote will be delivered by Rüdiger Joppienwill, the curator and head of the Art Nouveau and 20th Century European Decorative Arts departments at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Hamburg, Germany, who will speak on the subject of “dance as the expression and abstraction of the corporeal in Germany in the 1920s.”

Other speakers include Roger Billcliffe, a Glasgow gallery owner who has published widely on contemporary Scottish Art and an expert on the designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and Gareth Williams, a professor at the Royal College of Art, and the former curator of 20th century and contemporary furniture at the Victoria & Albert Museum who curated a notable exhibition entitled “Telling Tales” on contemporary design trends.

The conference will wrap up with a panel discussion of all the diverse speakers that will be moderated by Tina Oldknow, Corning’s curator of modern glass.
