The cover of the forthcoming title Harvey LIttleton: A Life in Glass
A new biography chronicles the life of Harvey Littleton, considered the founder of the Studio Glass movement, in a 208-page volume by Joan Falconer Byrd, a prolific author of books and catalog exhibitions about glass and ceramic art. Promising never-before-seen photographs from Littleton’s personal archives, and the insights of Byrd, a student of Littleton’s first glassblowing course at the University of Wisconsin and a regular chronicler of Littleton’s life and work, the book is timed to be published by Skira Rizzoli later this year, just before the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Studio Glass movement, which is dated to the 1962 workshops Littleton led at the Toledo Museum of Art.
In a fundraising letter being sent by Harvey’s son, John, the book is being billed as the first biography of this important figure in glass (it’s remarkable that such a biography hasn’t been published sooner). The release of the book will roughly coincide with the November 17th, 2011 opening of a commemorative exhibition at The Corning Museum of Glass called “Founders of Studio Glass: Harvey Littleton” and drawing artworks and artifacts of this Corning native son from the museum’s permanent holdings and the artist’s personal collection.
John Littleton, in his fundraising letter, writes: “The cost of producing and publishing the book is estimated at $80,000. The Littleton Family has already committed over $28,000. We are inviting you to help produce this important historic record of the Studio Glass Movement, and honor the life and work of Harvey Littleton.”
Those who donate $250 or more will receive a copy signed by Joan Falconer Byrd. Checks are to be made out to “UW Foundation” with the memo line “Chazen Art Museum Harvey K Littleton Biography.”
