Neon Tube Bending

December 4th - December 8th
Grant Gullikson, Jeremy Bert |

This is a class about the wonderful world of neon. We will take an in-depth look at glass bending processes required for neon tube production. Grant and Jeremy will demonstrate technique and explain how neon works. Class time will also include student torch time and one on one instruction. We will start at the most basic level and progress thru the handful of bends used to manipulate soft glass tubing. Demonstrations will include installation information and discussion about transformers and misc. hardware. Our goal as instructors is to provide a basic understanding of the technique and vocabulary to talk about neon.

Neon tube fabrication requires very careful handwork. Becoming a master bender happens only after many hours of practice. Unless you are extremely gifted, you will not become a glass bender in our 5 days together. You will however get a chance to experience the material in the torches and come out of it with a simple object of luminous phenomenon. More importantly you have an understanding of how neon works and will be able to explain your ideas to professionals in the sign industry.
