Intro to Scientific Boro

March 4th - March 5th
Celeste Tsang |

In this two-day, weekend workshop learn good basics and procedures to set yourself up for success in hollow borosilicate. Class will consist of demonstrations followed by working time to practice each exercise. Round bottoms, side seals, straight seals, points, straightening, bending tubing, coil making and more.  A bit like a bootcamp, this workshop will focus on repetitive practice of each step to build skills in hollow borosilicate. Come prepared to learn and have fun!

What to Expect: A bit like rubbing your stomach and patting your head at the same time, flameworking makes use of dexterity and hand eye coordination. We will be using both hands sometimes turning in tandem together and at other times independently. Come prepared for a challenge with some successes and failures. This weekend workshop will consist of demonstrations followed by practice time for each exercise. We will be working with an open flame as well as learning to adjust the torch to produce different flames. Some boro experience is always good, but not required.

What to expect: Flameworking requires a little practice at heat control with the torch to create successful pieces. After demonstrations, expect to make some successful objects in this class, and a couple failures, while gaining confidence and skill in the studio. Read more about how to prepare for class on our Registration Info page.

Eligibility: Good for those with some boro experience looking to get more hand skills at the bench, or for the beginner looking for a challenge and not afraid to jump into the deep end.

Pick-up: The glass needs to cool down overnight, so the students will have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up their work.

This is an in-person class taking place on-site at UrbanGlass. Health and safety guidelines will be emailed to you upon registration.
