Designing Negative Space: Hot Glass & Moldmaking

Students will design experimental negative spaces in order to create unpredictable positive forms in glass. Using moldmaking as a starting point; students will sculpt, carve, and combine materials to create a hollow cavity to be blown into with molten glass. Working quickly, pursuing the unexpected and uninhibited, students will gain information and inspiration while finding the line between completed objects and their failed counterparts. The object of this class is to highlight and expand the unforeseen and surprising results often found in the texture and gestural potential of mold-blown glass. Students will be introduced to mold-making as a tool to form glass and learn the fundamentals of glassblowing, then will bend those guiding principles for new and inventive results. Content will be guided by discussions, presentations, and quick assignments.

Liesl Schubel

Liesl received her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 2012, majoring in Glass. She has since continued traveling, pursuing opportunities to expand her understanding of art and craft at institutions such as WheatonArts and Cultural Center in Millville, NJ, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, ME, the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, VA, Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, WA, and Ox-Bow School of Art in Saugatuck, MI. Liesl currently lives in New York City maintaining a varied art practice.

Cooper O’Brien received his BFA in glass from RISD in 2012. He creates work that weaves the technical challenge of glass making with the larger issue of creating something worth the effort.
