Take the plunge and explore what can occur when glassblowing, kiln casting and coldworking are combined in the making process. Working collaboratively and merging kiln casting, coldworking and hot shop techniques, students will cast, blow, and cold work elements, such as handles, feet and stems, that will then be combined with blown glass in the hot shop making hybrid sculptural and/or functional works. Through experimental assemblage, kiln casting and hot glass pick-up techniques, students will develop a wider vocabulary of techniques and possibilities with which to approach their work.
What to Expect: Time will be split between the mold shop, kiln room, glassblowing studio and cold shop. This is an experimental process, so expect both successes and failures along the way! Whatever you create over the course of the class, you will walk away with new knowledge and skills in each of these studios. Read more about how to prepare for class on our Registration Info page.
Handling glass and tools may require a certain level of dexterity and ability to lift 5-10 lbs approximately. To learn more about accessibility the Accessibility page on our website.
Eligibility: Previous glassblowing experience required. You should have 1-2 years of experience, and feel comfortable gathering and moving through the steps of making a basic cup. You must be able to Kiln casting experience preferred but not required. Open to ages 14 and up.
Pick-up: The glass needs to cool down overnight, so the students will have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up any work made hot in the final week.
