According to their daughters, the late art collectors Jules and Conney Kay, of Rydal, Pennsylvania, kept their long marriage strong through their shared love of collecting art, including glass.
It "was something they experienced and enjoyed together," Sally Hochhauser, one of the couple's three daughters, says in a statement supplied by the Lambertville, New Jersey, auction house, where the collection will go on sale soon. "My parents loved art in all its forms, and they loved each other very much. It was, in every sense, a true love story.”
On Thursday, September 17th, Rago Auction will present 14 works from the Kay Collection—along with two other unnamed collections from Sarasota and Orlando, Florida—in a major contemporary glass auction that features multiple works by Nancy Callan, Dale Chihuly, Laura De Stantillana, Stanislav Libensky & Jaroslova Brychtova, Dante Marioni, Tobias Møhl, William Morris, Yoichi Ohira, Lino Tagliapietra, and Toots Zynsky.
Rago partner Suzanne Perrault told the Glass Quarterly Hot Sheet that the upcoming auction of 150 lots will consist of a rare and diversified sale of glass work she calls "most interesting and sophisticated, covering unusual series and examples by the best artists."
Among the works Perrault singles out is a rare Mark Peiser that showcases his masterful use of opalescent glass, which really comes to life when illuminated, revealing an extraordinary radiance.
Perrault also noted the quality of the Judith Schaechter work, citing it's intriguing narrative which unfolds on an unusual scale, which draws attention to the work's defining warmth, texture and character.
These and additional artworks are already available online, allowing advance bids to be placed ahead of the big sale, which begins the day after tomorrow at 11:00 AM EST.
