The world-renowned glassmaker, Paul Stankard, will deliver the first lecture of the New York Metropolitan Glass Club’s 2010-2011 season. In his address, he will describe how his interest in the mysticism of nature, combined with botanical realism, led to his production of “Botanicals” – delicate sculptures of flowers, insects and human forms encased in crystal clear environments.
As a child growing up in North Attleboro, Massachusetts, Mr. Stankard was fascinated by the naturalistic glass animals that were popular at the time. His interest led him to study the tradition of glass artistry begun in the 19th century by Baccarat, St. Louis and Clichy, famed for their exquisite flower paperweights. Influenced by the French masters and captivated by the flower studies of the Blashkas in this country, he began a life long quest to master the lamp-making techniques that enable him to create the lush assemblages present in each of his pieces. The magnifying effect of the crystal brings out the tiny details present in the wings of bees and the colors of the realistic renderings of flowers.
Mr. Stankard also teaches glassmaking, is a Fellow at the Corning Museum of Glass, and is on the faculties of the Penland School of Craft in Penland, North Carolina, Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey and Urban Glass in Brooklyn, New York.
