OPENING: UrbanGlass spotlights work by recent graduates of M.F.A. programs

Since 2004, UrbanGlass has been hosting a juried exhibition to highlight the best work by recent graduates of M.F.A. programs whose work features glass. The 2014 MFA exhibition will open on January 22nd in the Robert Lehman Gallery at the Agnes Varis Art Center at UrbanGlass in Brooklyn, New York. The four artists whose work will be featured are Melissa Athey (Virginia Commonwealth University); Sarah Briland (VCU); Weston Lambert (Tulane University); and Wil Sideman (Rochester Institute of Technology).

Athey's work uses glass and robotics to create installations that explore our sense of self. Her former classmate at VCU Briland presents work that connects science with studies of painting, drawing and sculpture. Lambert, who received a Joan Mitchell Foundation grant for his thesis exhibition at Tulane, references seeds in his large-scale sculptures of glass, wood and aluminum, which encases glass inside protective rigid enclosures. And Wil Sideman, a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology, uses the transparency of glass to investigate his family's relationship to the sea, and the tools used in maritime trades.

The jury of UrbanGlass's 2014 MFA Exhibition Competition consisted of artist and teacher Amy Lemaire; assistant professor at the Bard Graduate Center, Catherine Whalen; and artist Stephanie Powell. Support for this exhibition is generously provided by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the Robert Lehman Foundation.
