COLLECT, the international arts fair for contemporary objects, will take place at Saatchi Gallery in London from May 11 through May 14, 2012. The fair, which is sponsored by the Crafts Council and is currently in its fourth year, will present work from 31 of the world’s leading craft galleries from Italy, the UK, Japan, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Norway, Ireland and more. COLLECT 2012 will showcase and sell ceramic, glass, jewelry,wood, textile, furniture, silver and fine metal work created by over 500 international artists including glass artists Tobias Mohl, Angela Jarman, Colin Reid, Rachel Woodman, Udo Zembok, Gillies Jones, David Reekie, Steffen Dam and Paula Stokes among others.
COLLECT has been a fair of interest for collectors and museum curators alike. This year marks the fifth year of Art Fund Collect, a partnership between the Crafts Council and the Art Fundwhich offers UK curators the chance to buy contemporary craft for their institutions, paid for in full ( up to £75,000) by the Art Fund.
Currently, Art Fund Collect has provided over £275,000 of new work for public museums and galleries in the UK. This year’s list of museum cruators chosen to take part in Art Fund Collect includes Aberdeen Art Gallery, Alison Fraser, Beaney Art Museum and Library, Krystyna Matyjaszkiewicz, National Museum Wales, Rachel Conroy, National Museums Scotland, Rosina Buckland, Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Tony Eccles and Holly Morgenroth, Whitworth Art Gallery, Jennifer Harris, Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery, Francesca Vanke, Museums Sheffield, Lucy Cooper and Touchstones Rochdale, Yvonne Hardman. Some past winners of Art Fund Collect include Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, National Museum Wales – Amgueddfa Cymru, Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art and Nottingham Castle Museum & Art Gallery.
Artists will occupy the ground and first floor of Saatchi Gallery while the second floor will be dedicated to the “Project Space“ which will feature ten installations by artists with a focus on textiles and furniture. The ten artists included in the Project Space this year are: Anna Ray, Geoff Crook and Peter Jones, Elizabeth Callinicos, Louise Gardiner, Lucy Brown, Maryrose Watson, Nahoko Kojima, Rosa Cortiella, Stacy Brafield and Vanja Bazdulj. The lectures will discuss a variety of subjects including art in the public place, curation, technique, the history of contemporary art and more.
