On September 7, 2013, the Glass Studio at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario will host an open-studio event. Titled “Glass Gathering 2013,” the event means to connect current students with alumni and other glass enthusiasts in order to promote greater interaction between them. Occurring at the start of the academic year, the event intends to spark excitement within the studio and start a new annual tradition.

Canadian glass artist Paull Rodrigue, an alumnus of Sheridan, helped initiate the idea, and many stages of planning have occurred since. The planner of the event, student Megan Smith, told the GLASS Quarterly Hot Sheet over the phone that, “There’s a little bit of gap between graduates and current students. We wanted to find a way to bring them back together. We thought of a lot things we could do. We’ve had meetings with people in the Ontario glass community to see what they wanted.”

The event will include numerous activities including demonstrations by instructors and other glass artists, hot shop games that will mix students with professionals, and a silent auction that will split all proceeds between the Glass Art Association of Canada and funds for next year’s event. There will be a photo booth and a show of student work. Additionally, the event will feature quick 10-minute talks in a separate room, in which anyone involved with glass can share their thoughts. The talks are meant to attract students who want to share their work, gallery owners with advice, people who have owned their own glass studios, or other individuals who can say what they would have done differently with their careers.

The event is free. A BBQ lunch will be provided, as well as a bar location for drinks afterward.
Sign up to donate, give a talk or demonstration, or to participate in the planned glass games at GlassGathering@gmail.com. Enter the event’s t-shirt design contest by July 31st.
