Call for Submissions: Design exhibition exploring new uses of glass invites artists

For the 2009 American Design Club exhibition "Purpose and Worth," the window of a Design Within Reach store in Manhattan was painted with a provocative Charles Eames quote: "The details are not details. They make the product."

The American Design Club in association the Heller Gallery will curate and present a collection of contemporary glass design. To be titled “BREAKABLE: Glass By Design,” the exhibition is scheduled to coincide with the International Contemporary Furniture Fair which runs from May 15th — 18th, 2010.

This will be the fourth competition/exhibition by a group of designers, three of whom are principals at Rich, Brilliant, Willing, a Manhattan-based contemporary design firm known for pushing the limits of materials in their work. Their first such exhibition, titled “Outside of Sorts,” took place in 2008 and explored the concept of “outside” in a wide range of design objects.

Key points from a press release about the exhibition:

  • The curators will consider and select work from submissions with glass as the primary focus.
  • The theme will highlight work that can do new and interesting things with the material. As always, the aim of the show is to present excellence in new American Design, based on the theme, in the best possible setting. The work will be judged by a panel to be decided.
  • The theme for BREAKABLE is glass. Glass must be used as the primary material if not the only material. There will be an emphasis on selecting new work for the show.
  • A time line for production must be include with all submissions. You need be neither “American” nor a “Designer” to submit, membership to the American Design Club is assumed once your work has been exhibited in an AmDC show.
  • BREAKABLE submissions will close January 31st, 2010.
  • Submissions to be received no later than midnight on January 31st.
  • BREAKABLE will coincide with ICFF 2010. May 15-18. Exact launch date is TBD.
  • Venue: Heller Gallery in the Meat Packing District. 420 West 14th St., New York N.Y. 10014. www.hellergallery.com
