The art center known as Minnetrista, in partnership with the Marilyn K. Glick Center for Glass at Ball State University, will host its first-ever glass cooperative juried art show. According to the official website, “GLASS: A Juried Art Show” will focus on “portraying the breadth and range of glass in the contemporary contexts of craft, sculpture and mixed media art.” It will be hosted by Minnetrista, in Muncie, Indiana, a center for art programs, workshops and exhibits.
Supported by a grant from the Art Alliance for Contemporary Glass, the event will award artists up to $10,000. The work selected will become part of the permanent collection of the Ball State Museum of Art. Work accepted into the show will be showcased in the Glass Biennial 2012 full color catalog.
Artists may enter a maximum of three works. There is a $35 entry fee and all artists must be 18 years of age or older. Types of entries are limited to glass or glass-related decorative and experimental pieces. No entry may exceed 50 pounds in weight or be larger than 24 by 36 by 35 inches in dimensions. The jury will be made up of a single judge—Katherine Gray. Gray is a renowned glass artist who has curated several glass exhibitions, written about glass and taught workshops around the world. Her work can be found in the collections of the Corning Museum of Glass, the Tacoma Museum of Glass and the Museum of American Glass. The LA Times published a post in their art blog reviewing Gray’s most recent solo show at Acuna—Hansen Gallery in Los Angeles, saying it is “unfortunate that glass does not take center stage more often when it comes to contemporary art.”
Entries must have been completed within the past two years and must not have been accepted previously for any juried exhibition at Minnetrista.
The deadline for artists submitting work is Friday, February 24, 2012. Notification of acceptance will be e-mailed no later than Monday, April 2, 2012.The opening event will be held on Friday, May 11, 2012. Awards will be presented at the event. The exhibit is open to the public from May 12 through August 12, 2012. Work accepted into the show will be showcased in the Glass Biennial 2012 full color catalog.
