The Greek arts organization Santorini Biennale of Arts is calling for glass entries for its biannual contemporary visual arts event. According to the official website, Santorini Biennale of the Arts 2012 “The Past: History, Time, Memory or Nostalgia: How do you define your relationship with The Past?” will focus on thought-provoking exhibitions that not only raise questions, but suggest answers on the theme of the past as an indicator of the future. According to the Santorini Biennale of Arts’ official call to glass artists, the goal is “identifying new relationships between glass material and the languages of contemporary art, then pushing these to the extremes; expressing personal reflections on the past as an idea, and on its potential implications for the future.” The artists whose work is selected will take part in a three-month long exhibition that will be held at multiple locations on both Santorini and Thirassia Islands (click here for a list of venues) plus a program of artist talks, performances, forums, film screenings, family events, guided tours and other events.

Sarah Falanga, art manager, emerging curator and art historian from Naples, Italy will be curating the glass art section of the event. The Santorini Biennale Jury of artistic directors and curators, will recognize excellence by awarding a gold, platinum, or bronze statuette of an ibex. The prize winners will also be awarded a cash prizes of 1.500 EUR (US$ 1,950), 1.000 EUR (US$ 1,325), and 500 EUR (US$ 662) respectively. The top 10 vote-based finalists of every section will also be honored with a special award and a cash prize to be announced. All finalists will be included in the official full-color print and digital awards book published at the end of November.

Submissions for the glass section from single artists, collectives or collaborative groups are welcomed. Participation is open to all professional and amateur artists. Each artist can submit up to five pieces or a series of items in digital format to be reviewed by the curator. The curator can approve one or more artworks per artist, collective or collaborative group. Pieces may include other materials, but should be 30 percent glass and may not date earlier than January 1, 2008. Preference will be given to those works that demonstrate a particular originality and talent in the use of glass as medium of contemporary artistic expression. The deadline for artists submitting work is May 9, 2012. Santorini Biennale of Arts will take place from July 1st to September 30, 2012. View extended entry terms and conditions here.

Santorini Biennale of Arts’s mission is to promote both emerging and established artists working in different disciplines surpassing the traditional and sometimes limiting concepts of classicism, modernism, contemporary and applied arts. Register to submit work here.
