Sometimes parts that are integral to a whole need to be created separately before being assembled into a finished state. For Part and Parcel we will concentrate on part-making, all the whys and hows of making cast glass elements that later combine with each other, other process-made glass parts or found objects. Students should come with ideas for making sculptural or functional forms that consist of various elements. As a class and individually we will discuss, technically and visually how best to deconstruct these forms in order to re-make them in parts, and in doing so will explore in-process design strategies and post-casting assembly options. Technically, our focus will be on lost-wax casting, including processes for making wax multiples, approaches to spruing and venting and of course mold-making and firing strategies along with all of the necessary information in between. Some familiarity with glass casting basics is a plus, but not mandatory.
