This one day workshop is an introduction to coldworking. Students will be familiarized with the major tools in UrbanGlass’ cold shop, including the tile saws, grit and diamond wheels, belt sanders, lathes, polishing wheels, sand blaster, and flex shaft. Techniques without equipment will also be addressed including use of diamond pads and hand lapping. The goal of this introductory session is to learn how to safely and effectively use cold shop equipment and illustrate some of the possibilities of coldworking for finishing, altering, and resurfacing forms. If you have a particular piece you are curious about coldworking or problem solving it, bring it to class and we’ll find solutions.
What to Expect:Students can expect to watch a number of demonstrations and have time to practice coldworking on three objects using different techniques. Tools and materials will be provided. The cold shop equipment can be loud, and all equipment is water fed. Students should wear waterproof shoes, an apron, safety glasses, and ear protection are provided.
