The show is comprised of nearly 1,000 drinking glasses donated by people from around the world, organizers said.
"A call went out requesting drinking glasses, preferably brown, green, or clear and before coming to Brooklyn to stage this piece I was not sure what to expect," Gray said in a statement. "Glasses arrived from all across the country, and from as far away and England and Australia."
The exhibit is a statement on the life cycle of glass, which is made of melting down sand under very high temperatures, fueled by the heat of burned trees.
"A Tree Grows" is on display at UrbanGlass at 647 Fulton Street through Jan. 4.
