University of Edinburgh graduate takes top honors at first design prize by the British glass artists

Alan Horsley, center, surrounded by jurors, won the first prize in the Contemporary Glass Society's first-ever young designer competition.

The Contemporary Glass Society of England has announced the winner and runners up for its inaugural design prize which debuted at New Designers, an annual convention that brings together recent design graduates and business representatives. Held each July for the past 25 years, the 2010 event took place at London’s Business Design Centre, where from July 1st – 11th, approximately 3,500 recent graduates in design have been visiting the event looking for new jobs and getting to know prospective employers in all areas of industry. A number of design awards are distributed during the event, including the first-ever CGS design prize, which was won by Alan Horsley, a recent graduate of the Edinburgh College of Art.


As winner, Horsley will receive a cash prize of £250 (approximately $380 USD), £100 ($151 USD) worth of vouchers from CGS’s commercial sponsor Warm Glass, a photo shoot of his work with photographer James Barclay-Brown of Oculus Photography and various promotional opportunities through the CGS’s website and publications, as well as a free CGS membership for 2 years.

The judges for the competition were Teleri Lloyd Jones, an editorial assistant at Crafts Magazine, Alan J Poole of Dan Klein Associates, glass artist Catherine Hough and glass artist and CGS representative Karen Murphy.

The runners up this year are: Kane Calì and Lauren Entwisle, both graduates of University of the Creative Arts, Farnham campus. Each have received a prize package of: £300 $455 USD), which includes £50 ($75 USD) worth of vouchers for materials from commercial sponsor Creative Glass UK, and various promotional opportunities through CGS as well as a membership package worth £250 ($380 USD).

There were also four other graduates who received recognition: Charlotte Clark of University of Wolverhampton, Janey Pointing of Plymouth School of Art, Sheri Palmer of UCA, Farnham and Graeme Thyer of Edinburgh College of Art.
