Since it was founded in 2005, the United States Artists nonprofit organization has been awarding 50 artists, architects, writers, playwrights, dancers, and filmmakers a $50,000 grant each year in fulfillment of the organization’s mission “to invest in America’s finest artists and illuminate the value of artists to society.” Among this year’s recipients is Sibylle Peretti, a German-born multimedia artist working primarily in glass, who has resided in New Orleans since 1996. Listed under the category of “Craft & Traditional Arts,” Peretti will join the ranks of previous glass artist recipients Beth Lipman (2011), Mary Shaffer (2009), and Judith Schaecter (2008).

The United States Artists Website states “Using glass as a canvas, Peretti creates dreamlike figurative works that can incorporate drawing or photography. She has recently created a series of works on the theme of feral children, which allows her to explore the often-fraught relationship between humans and nature.” Peretti is represented by Heller Gallery in New York City.

(Disclosure: Heller Gallery co-director Katya Heller is also on the board of directors of UrbanGlass, which published the Hot Sheet.)

Glass: The UrbanGlass Quarterly, a glossy art magazine published four times a year by UrbanGlass has provided a critical context to the most important artwork being done in the medium of glass for more than 40 years.
