Help Wanted: Harrisburg Area Community College seeks adjunct glass professor for Spring 2011 semeste

Harrisburg Area Community College seeks to fill an immediate opening for an adjunct faculty member to teach glass classes at the Harrisburg campus in Pennsylvania. The glass program is part of the college’s “Contemporary Craft Marketing Program,” which blends an apprentice-like experience in the studio with courses in English composition, business math, phyical fitness, art history, and other related coursework. This unusual approach to glass and other craft skills education falls under the college’s Communications, Humanities, and the Arts division, and even includes a catchy tagline: “Turning artisans into pros.”

According to the official job posting (membership required) on the Glass Art Society‘s Website, “duties include teaching fusing, casting, blowing, and cold-working as well as hot-shop maintenance, safety, and supervision.” The typical courseload is two classes. The campus hot shop operates for about eight weeks out of the semester “and professional development is encouraged.” The facilities include a fusing/casting kiln, three annealing ovens, a 400-pound tank furnace, two glory holes, and cold-working equipment.
