In a celebration of the development of studio glass throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, the European Studio Glass Art Association will host the second bi-annual international glass art show, Biennale du Verre: Silicium Project 2011. From the banks of France’s Ill River to the heart of Venice, Italy the ESGAA has planned a number of events which will move between 12 sites throughout Europe between June and November 2011. 12 sites, including museums, art schools, and private establishments, will host exhibitions during the summer and fall that will showcase contemporary studio glass work and the advancements made within the movement.
Following in the footsteps of similar European glass celebration Capital Glass, a glass show hosted by the ESGAA in 2006 and 2007, Biennale du Verre was founded by the ESGAA in 2009. In it’s second year, Biennale du Verre will spend six months touring two major regions of known for their roots in glassworking history. ESGAA has organized a series of exhibits for the show that will highlight the tradition of glassworking rooted in Europe, and also current work reflective of recent trends in glass making.
The first portion of the glass show will take place in Venice, from June 4 – Sept 15 at Palazzetto Bru Zane. The museum will host an exhibit featuring the work of Slovakian glass artist Vladimir Zbynovsky and Italian glass artist Renato Santarossa. The second portion of the show will take place in Murano, from July 15 – Sept 30 at The Museum of Glass Murano. Featured in various exhibits will be artists Caroline Prisse, Joan Crous, Vincent Breed, and Bert Frijns.
The final portion of the show will take place throughout the Alsace region of France from October 14 – November 28, at ten locations. The Wurth Museum in Erstein will host a retrospective of the studio glass movement within 20th and 21st century, and The Strasbourg Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art will exhibit a retrospective of French artist Maurice Marinot’s glasswork. In addition to these two specific exhibitions, various shows and events will be hosted throughout the months by The Regional Council of Alsace, The County Council of the Bas-Rhin area, La Cour des Boecklin, Italian Cultural Institute, La Chaufferie Gallery of the Graduate School of Decorative Arts of Strasbourg, La Chambre, European Art Association Apollonia, and CIC-Est Bank Corporation headquarters. Complimenting the exhibitions taking place throughout Alsace will be a project developed by ESGAA, Strasbourg School of Decorative Arts, and Abate Zanetti Glass School. Two students at the Strasbourg School of Decorative Arts will collaborate with Abate Zanetti Glass School to produce a unique piece specifically for Biennale du Verre.
