Jenn Kahn was an UrbanGlass visiting artist in 2011.
The Agnes Varis Visiting Artist Fellowship at UrbanGlass is designed to provide a woman artist the opportunity to develop a new body of work exploring ideas and techniques using the medium of glass. Varis Fellowships will be provided for one artist per year for each of the next five years, with the first fellowship to be awarded in 2013. Fellowships are 8 weeks in length, and include access to all areas of the UrbanGlass brand-new 17,000-square-foot glassworking studio. The deadline for applications is May 31, 2013.
The fellowship includes the following elements:
- A private work space within the UrbanGlass Studio.
- Scheduled access to all UrbanGlass studios, technical support and instruction.
- A budget to cover materials and studio fees for the length of fellowship (to be outlined in the fellowship agreement, prior to the start of term).
- An honorarium of $1,500 for artist’s discretionary use.
- IMPORTANT NOTE: This fellowship does not include lodgings or meals.
The residency calendar is as follows:
- Application due by 5 pm, Friday, May 31, 2013.
- Recipient will be notified by Monday, July 15, 2013.
- Fellowship must begin between October 1, 2013 and December 31, 2013.
UrbanGlass’ newly renovated 17,000-square-foot facility contains a complete glassworking studio with a hot shop, cold shop, lampworking studio, neon shop and kiln shop. The fellow may make use of any or all of these areas of the studio.
The Agnes Varis Visiting Artist Fellowship is designed to provide a woman artist with the opportunity to develop a body of work and explore new techniques using the medium of glass. Artists will be chosen on the basis of past work and specific plans for utilizing UrbanGlass’ facilities as described in their proposal. Artists working both within and outside the glass field art encouraged to apply. A selection committee of artists, glass professionals, critics and UrbanGlass Staff will review applications. Notification of selection will be made no later than Monday, July 15, 2013.
ELIGIBILITY
- Applicants must be over 21 years of age when fellowship commences.
- Applicants must be female.
- Applicants must have basic English language skills.
- Glass experience is not required.
- Applicant should be available in New York for the public announcement of fellowship in October 2013. (Availability will not affect selection process.)
The following are NOT eligible to apply
- Current students.
- Current UrbanGlass employees.
- Current UrbanGlass board members.
- Artists who have received a grant from UrbanGlass in the last two fiscal years.

Application must include:
- Completed application form (either online form or hardcopy)
- Current CV or resume
- One to two-page proposal and project description, including:
- Techniques and materials you intend to use.
- How your time at UrbanGlass will benefit your career and artistic development.
- Why this project is best undertaken at the UrbanGlass Studio.
- How you plan to give back the UrbanGlass Community (consider a demonstration, lection, presentation, exhibiiton, etc.)
- Ten Images:
- Include an image list which describes title, date, media/technique and dimensions for each image.
- Label each file with your last name and the number corresponding to your image list
- JPG files only, 300 dpi at 3” x 5”.
- Only one piece per image, please.
- Two letters of recommendation: If sent under separate cover, letters must reach UrbanGlass by the application deadline.
