GLASS Quarterly Hot Sheet: What are you working on?
Julius Weiland: Right now I’m preparing a September solo exhibition for the Litvak Gallery in Tel Aviv. For this venue I will do an installation with neon and silvered glass. Neon is a medium I’ve worked with before. I like very much the immaterial quality of it and how it can change the perception of a space.
I started working with the silvering of glass a few month ago when I was ask to do a commission work for the Ritz Carlton in Hong Kong. Through that project, I found an interesting way to silver some of the elements in my work, with some tubes staying clear. This way I achieved irregular structures, which correlate to my concept of the unforeseeable.

The installation in Tel Aviv will be a formation of random lines drawn in space, a further approach to the idea of nothingness, which plays a large role in my work.

GLASS: What have you seen recently that inspired you?
Julius: I get a lot of inspiration from the materials I’m working with. The studio is like a laboratory for me where I try new things and where a lot of things happen by chance. I’m also working with materials other than glass, for example, acrylic resin and PU, and the ways of working influence one another a lot.
Right now I’m very much inspired by street art. Berlin, the city where I live and work, has
a lot to offer in that respect. Besides the art that is to be seen at the numerous galleries
and collections, I get surprised by sudden encounters of street art on the metro platform
or spontaneous concerts on a pick-up truck on the side of the street.
GLASS: Do you have any exhibitions coming up that you can talk about?
Julius: From September 10th through the 24th, 2011, I’ll have work in “Made in Germany III,” an exhibition at New Glass Art, Berlin. On September 17th, I’ll have an opening for my solo exhibition at Litvak Gallery, Tel Aviv. From November 4th through 6th, my work will be represented by Litvak Gallery at SOFA Chicago 2011.
