Join us on Saturday, May 7th, for UrbanGlass' Open Studios: Weird Science!
Is it a liquid or a solid? Strong or fragile? Explore the fascinating physical properties and scientific applications of glass during our Open Studios event: Weird Science! Visitors of all ages are invited to explore our spectacular-- and closed to the public-- 17,000 square foot facility, watch artists demonstrate a variety of glassmaking techniques, participate in hands-on activities, and learn about this fascinating material from UrbanGlass educators.
We will also have the Weird Science Fair in our Art Center. Artists from the UrbanGlass Studio will be showing and demonstrating science based projects, from bug taxidermy to interactive light designs. The one day pop-up exhibition will take place in the Agnes Varis Art Center, located on the ground level of 647 Fulton Street.
Hands-on activities include:
Glassblowing: Sculpt Molten Matter into Vessels - In a 30 minute lesson, work one-on-one with an artist to explore the basics of glassblowing and learn about 2,000 degree molten glass. Ages 11 and up can participate in the lesson and create a unique work of art, which will be available to take home after annealing the following week. Register
Glass fusing - Learn how to skillfully assemble, melt, and fuse colorful glass for a unique creation. Your project will be melted in our kilns by a technician, and available to take home the next week. This activity can be enjoyed by all ages. Register
Flamework Scientific Glass on an Assembly Line! - In a 30 Minute lesson, work on an assembly line process, using a torch to melt glass. Using scientific glass, you will work with an instructor, making a component that gets finished down-the-line! Ages 11 and up can participate in the lesson and create a unique work of art, which will be available to take home after annealing the following week. Register
