Richard Whiteley became an apprentice in stained glass at the age of sixteen; he holds an undergraduate degree from the School of Art + Design, Australian National University (Glass) and a Master’s degree (MFA, Sculpture) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is currently an Associate Professor and the Head of the Glass Workshop at the School of Art + Design, Australian National University and a Visiting Professor for the China Academy of Art Glass Program, Hangzhou, China. Whiteley's works are held in major museums and private collections worldwide including: The Australian National Gallery, the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning NY and the Toledo Museum, OH. He is currently leading a multidisciplinary research team (Art, Physics/Engineering and Classics) who are looking at the manufacturing processes of ancient Roman cameo glass. This practice led research is significant and Whiteley has been invited to present his findings at the British Museum in November of 2017.
